Overview

If you buy an Office 365 subscription from Microsoft, and later get a subscription through the university, IU cannot refund the cost of your purchase from Microsoft.

Office 365 is a subscription-based service that allows IU students, faculty, and staff to use the newest versions of Microsoft Office on their personal Windows and macOS computers, via the web with Office Online apps, and on their smartphones and tablets with Office Mobile apps. Your IU Office 365 subscription allows you to install Microsoft Office on up to five personal computers (Windows and macOS), five tablets (Windows, iPad, and Android), and five phones. The subscription entitles you to use the software as long as your IU computing accounts are active; you are not entitled to use the software after you leave IU.

The new employees would log into their computers, build a local profile, and everything would work everything, that is, except for Skype for Business. To make matters worse, this issue popped up on the new computers as well. The user would log in, build a new local profile, and be unable to log into Skype for Business. Consumer Skype accounts can be added to the contact list in Skype for Business. This allows you to communicate with Skype users while using Microsoft Skype for Business and vice-versa. Microsoft Skype for Business supports connectivity with the consumer version of Skype (skype.com).

Some Office 365 features will not be used with Indiana University's deployment of Office 365.

Access Office 365

To access Office 365, from a supported web browser, go to https://office.iu.edu. At the 'Sign in' prompt, enter your IU username followed by @iu.edu (do this no matter what your email address is). At the password prompt, enter your IU passphrase. Do not click anything on the sign-in pages other than Next and Sign in.

Office 365 offers several options for accessing Microsoft Office applications:

  • Office 365: Office 365 is the current desktop version of the Microsoft Office suite, available for Windows and macOS. Office 365 includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Skype for Business, and Access (Windows only).
    • Install Office 365 for Windows:
      1. From the Office 365 home page, click Install Office, and then click Office 365 apps.
      2. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete your installation.
    • Install Office 365 for macOS:
      1. To download the installation package, click Install Now.
      2. Run the downloaded installation package and follow the on-screen instructions.
      3. After installation, open any Microsoft Office application and click the button to sign in.
      4. At the 'Sign in' prompt, enter your IU username followed by @iu.edu (do this no matter what your email address is). At the password prompt, enter your IU passphrase. Do not click anything on the sign-in pages other than Next and Sign in.
      Office 365 for Mac does not include Skype for Business. To install Skype for Business on a Mac, use IUware.

    To keep Office 365 activated, you must sign into your Office 365 account at least once every 30 days:

    1. From any Office 365 application, choose Sign In at the top right.
    2. At the 'Sign in' prompt, enter your IU username followed by @iu.edu (do this no matter what your email address is). At the password prompt, enter your IU passphrase. Do not click anything on the sign-in pages other than Next and Sign in.

    To access Office 365 services from within a Office 365 application, you must sign into your Office 365 account.

  • Office Online: The Office Online suite allows you to create and edit files using lightweight, web browser-based versions of Microsoft Office applications. The Office Online apps include Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneDrive, and Microsoft OneNote. Click any app to launch it in your browser.
  • Office Mobile apps: The Office Mobile apps are scaled-down, touch-optimized versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Microsoft OneNote. To get Office Mobile apps:
    1. Download the Microsoft Office apps you want from your device's app store.
    2. After installation, open an app and click the button to sign in.
    3. At the 'Sign in' prompt, enter your IU username followed by @iu.edu (do this no matter what your email address is). At the password prompt, enter your IU passphrase. Do not click anything on the sign-in pages other than Next and Sign in.

To sign into a Polycom Trio 8800 Using your Skype account please do the following:

1. Make sure the Polycom Trio Phone is set from General to Lync/Skype Enabled before you can sign in.
Go to: settings>Advanced>Administration Settings>Network Configuration>Base Profile = Lync

Select “Settings”

Select “Advanced”, and it will ask for a password. The default password is “456”.

Select “Administration Settings”

Select “Network Configuration”

In Base Profile Menu “Select “Lync Profile”

2. Enter your Skype User credentials now to sign into the phone.
This would be given that you’ve added the phone to the Provisioning server or another Provisioning Server, if you have skip the following and continue with the next step.
