3D artist Ivan Fernandez has recreated the Plaza environment from Half Life 2 in Unreal Engine 4. As such, this fan recreation can give us an idea of what a Half-Life 2 Remake could look like in modern-day engine.

HL2: Remastered combines HL2, Ep1, Ep2 into a single game flow and updates it to an even newer engine revision, with more bugfixes and improvements. Unlike Crysis Remastered, which is an official release from Crytek, a remastered version of Half-Life 2 from Valve was not announced since DSOGaming released it. It finally turned out to be a project developed by Filip Victor, the author of the community patch for Half-Life 2, “Half-Life 2: Update”.
Though the artist has used some textures from Quixel megascans directy on Unreal Engine for floors and walls, he also used Substance Painter in order to create some additional textures.

If 'Update' is any indication, 'Remastered' could be a continuous community effort, adding content to HL2. The holy grail in our opinion would be Valve releasing master versions of its textures for the game, so the game could receive a texture quality update. Find more details in. Rather than continuing the series’ story, Half-Life: Alyx will bridge the gap between the original Half-Life and Half-Life 2, making Black Mesa a great way to catch up on the story of Half-Life with a modern update to its visuals and gameplay.

This isn’t the first time we see Half Life 2 in Unreal Engine 4. In April 2018, we shared a video showcasing the original assets of Half-Life 2 in Unreal Engine 4. Then, in January 2019, we shared some screenshots from an environmental remake in UE4. And let’s not forget that amazing City 17 Apartment Remake that amazed everyone in 2015.
Still, we can safely say that this latest remake is the best we’ve seen so far. Ivan Fernandez has retained the art style and atmosphere of the original version. At the same time, the artist was able to overhaul the game’s graphics with better models, effects and textures.
Unfortunately, this fan remake has not been released to the public. However, we’ll be sure to share a download link once – and if – Fernandez releases it.
